See No Evil is examining the murder of Alisha Canales-McGuire, who was gunned down as she babysat her sister’s young children at their home in Everett, Washington.

The 24-year-old Alisha was the victim of a botched murder-for-hire instigated by her sister’s ex-husband, Kevin Lewis. The gunman was Lewis’s cousin, Jerradon Phelps, and he had been paid $2,400 to kill Amanda Canales, but he shot the wrong person by mistake.

On September 20, 2017, Amanda was out of town on business when, in the middle of the night, Phelps burst into her home and shot dead her sister, Alisha. Her three young children were sleeping in the house at the time.

Alisha had been helping the live-in nanny with the children while Amanda was away, and it was the nanny who found Alisha’s body lying on the floor in a pool of blood.

In 2017, Lewis and Amanda had been undergoing a bitter separation. Amanda had successfully filed a restraining order against her ex-husband after he had stalked her and made threats. On one occasion, he had even threatened to kill her if he didn’t get custody of their children.

A family court ruled the children should live with Amanda and that Lewis must pay alimony. However, Lewis hatched his plan with Phelps a short time later.

Kevin Lewis, Jerradon Phelps, and Alexis Hale planned the murder together

On the day before the murder, Phelps and his juvenile girlfriend, Alexis Hale, drove from Spokane to Everett, and Lewis took them to Amanda’s home. Phelps drove Lewis home before returning later for the murder.

The murder weapon was a black pistol Hale had got from her sister.

Earlier that day, Lewis had been granted a supervised visitation with his three children. The supervisor later told the cops that Lewis had ignored his children during the visit, spending most of the time on his cell phone. They later testified that they had a feeling Lewis was planning something.

The trio were largely undone due to cellphone records placing the three of them at the murder scene. Phelps also bragged on social media about all the money he had just received a few hours after the murder, and Hale bragged to her friends about killing someone in Snohomish County.

Lewis, Phelps, and Hale convicted of killing Alisha Canales-McGuire

Phelps pleaded guilty to premeditated first-degree murder and was sentenced to 31⅔ years. Hale also pleaded guilty to her role in the killing and was sentenced to 15 years.

In January 2022, Kevin Lewis was found guilty of aggravated first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

At the sentencing, Amanda called her ex-husband “pure evil” and asked him, “Did you care that if it was just me home that night, they would have woken up to find their own mother dead, lying in a pool of blood?”

See No Evil airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on Investigation Discovery.
